Allyson Rankin Reviews “Apple of My Pie” by Ava Khouri

The Apple of My Pie is a story that simply yet expertly teaches its readers how easy it is to be influenced by what we are told and by limiting our experiences to the things we know. Our protagonist, the little red apple, is told that red apples are the best kind by an older apple. She is also told that other colored apples are bossy and dull. The older apple that tells her this even states, and the audience is told, that she doesn’t actually know why red apples are the best, but that it was simply something she had been told. 

Now, I don’t think I need to tell anyone reading this how important a message “expanding your experiences” is, especially in this day and age when we are all so divided. Khouri uses her skills in writing and experience in empowering young people to address inequity and bias to deliver her readers in an expertly-constructed story about remembering that we aren’t that different at all.
