In the third book of the Montgomery Lake High series, the Aftermath, Jason Davids finds himself at a crossroads between who he has always been and who he thinks he could be. Taking place in the weeks following Andy’s potentially life-changing accident, the students at Montgomery Lake High School are all finding themselves affected by the situation in different ways. There are relationships breaking apart left and right, drugs and alcohol being abused, and some that are realizing that life is too short to be wasted with temporary highs. While Jason once knew exactly who he wanted to be in this world, Andy’s accident has forced him to take a step back and really reevaluate how he is choosing to spend his time. Now, he is forced to choose between maintaining his partier reputation and continuing his toxic relationship with Cathy, or choose a path he never saw coming, the one that takes him to a life of Faith.
The first two books of the Montgomery Lake High series showcase Jason as the boy with the most academic potential who thinks he is invincible when it comes to drugs. He struggles to see how his decisions have negatively impacted not only himself, but those around him. His own girlfriend has become someone her family cannot even recognize anymore, someone that nobody wants to be around. Jason thought he had everything under control, but when Andy’s life is put at risk, a consequence of Jason’s poor behavior, he is forced to come to terms with the reality of how out of hand everything has become. What he isn’t sure of, however, is if he has the strength to break free of his demons and accept the Faith that is calling out for him.
When Jason finds himself drawn to Jessie Robins, the pastor’s daughter, he immediately wants to connect more with her. Yet, seeing how his influence brought Cathy to such a bad place, he believes himself to be unworthy of her energy. What he isn’t aware of, is that Jessie feels spiritually guided to Jason. She believes that for whatever reason, God wants her and Jason to connect. As the story unfolds, it starts to seem as though Jessie is the strength that Jason needs in order to change his life around for the better and ultimately be the lesson he has to learn.
The Aftermath is an insightful look into one of Montgomery’s most popular kids with the most notorious reputations. To most of the other students, Jason is a lost cause who will end up addicted to drugs and skating by until his luck runs out. What they can’t see, is his inner desire to fix his life and treat people with love and kindness. After finishing this book, readers will walk away both reevaluating their ability to hold back from judging a book by its cover and eager to see if Jason can truly pull through and give himself up to Faith.
