My Refuge written by Deborah Fredette, follows her journey as a missionary in Uganda, presenting the trip in the form of short testimonies. Each chapter is formatted in a way that begins with a Bible verse and a quote, tells a story, and then offers an overall reflection. Fredette’s writing style is clear and well paced, allowing the reader to choose whether to reflect over the book one chapter at a time, or finish it all in one sitting. Each story is exciting, and non-repetitive, made only more interesting by the fact that they are all completely true.
This book is a great read for Christians of any age. The brevity of the book is contrasted by its depth, and I can imagine readers spending hours reflecting on each chapter. Others may also relate to the feeling of being in a foreign place, and not knowing how the next year or even the next day is going to go. Not only is Fredette’s story interesting, but her experience allows her to offer genuine and thoughtful advice about dealing with uncertainty as a Christian. If you are interested in mission work, or even just appreciate an inspiring testimony, I definitely recommend this book.
