Mexico got Lucky follows Jim and Lucky, an owner and his dog that gets separated when Lucky is stolen from Jim’s car. The story is written in an unique nonlinear fashion interspersed with chat messages from Viva San Carlos, a website with a community bulletin board that Jim frequents. Rico Austin illustrates this true story by changing between Jim’s perspective and the messages of outsiders, who become drawn into the search for Lucky. This book demonstrates both of the best and worst in humanity when it comes to caring for a pet.
It is clear that Austin has done a lot of research on dog rescue centers and the care of dogs based on the passion he pours into this writing. The book is interspersed with real life, locations, quotes, and short stories dedicated to educating the general public about real-life issues regarding the abandonment and mistreatment of dogs. Through Viva San Carlos, readers will also be able to see how people can come together as a collective when someone needs help. The genuine heart of the story makes it an inspirational read.
Despite the eventual recovery of Lucky, the journey to finding him again is grounded and realistic. Jim goes through every emotion that an owner who just lost his dog would: guilt, hope, helplessness, and the consideration of moving on. Considering the fact that this book is based on a true story, the realism of things going wrong only lends itself to the miraculousness of Lucky being found. It’s not unrealistic that people would try to scam a grieving dog owner out of his money, or even try to sell their own pets for the chance at a cash reward. However, the trials and tribulations only make the ending more satisfying. Overall, this is a lovely book for dog lovers, or anyone looking for an inspirational read!
