Review by Allyson Rankin, Plymouth, MA

There’s No Chocolate on Mars is a lovely kid-friendly story about the importance of food in bringing communities together. It’s about how focusing on the small joys in life and trying new things can create bonds that last lifetimes, no matter how different we are. Bretto’s skill shines brightest in his ability to make distinct and fun personalities in just a few words of dialogue, as well as implementing other little lessons in the character’s interactions with each other.
Moore’s art cannot be overlooked either; from the first page you already see the amount of love and care she put into the techniques used to make these breathtaking illustrations. The use of cool tones for the environment and backgrounds contrasting with the warm gold glow of the fallen star characters makes it feel as though one could actually feel the light’s warmth through the pages of the book. Overall, There’s No Chocolate on Mars is a wonderful story that I would absolutely recommend for kids, but also anybody who is looking for a simple yet comforting read. A great story to teach that you can find a family anywhere, in anyone.
