“Alijah XII” tells the story of how young Alijah spends her 12th birthday with Meema (her grandmother). We follow her thought process as she reflects on being in the crux between child and teenager. Kirja Ilija’s descriptions of Alijah’s past and present feelings engage all five senses, illustrating Alijah’s world in a way that anyone young or old can relate to. Things like the roughness of a wooden boardwalk, or the parental wariness of mosquitoes during camping make the reader feel like they are right next to Alijah and Meema as they discuss life.
This book also explores the ups and downs of the world through topics like bullying, self-respect, patience, and the importance of perspective. Ilija helps the readers approach Meema’s wisdom and life advice through the eyes of Alijah, allowing the character’s childish curiosity to shine while also letting her engage with Meema in a mature, thoughtful manner. By the end, the readers are left to ponder the cracks and crevices of life, just like Alijah does. This story is short, sweet, and leaves much to think about. I recommend this to anyone of any age!
